Born from the meeting between Paul Lay and Joël Suhubiette, Waves of Light extends their desire to bring together two worlds: that of the Les Éléments chamber choir, which since 1997 has been exploring five centuries of a cappella music, oratorio and opera, and that of Paul Lay, steeped in Western musical culture as well as African-American tradition, from jazz to blues, swing to gospel.
The chamber choir Les Éléments asked Paul Lay to compose a unique programme bringing together the two ensembles.
« La rencontre avec Paul Lay et son trio de jazz a été passionnant et nous a emmenés dans un domaine inexploré à ce jour. L'ensemble aime voyager vers des contrées inconnues. S’immerger activement dans cet univers du jazz, que la plupart d'entre nous ne connaissait qu'en tant qu'auditeurs, a été une nouveauté. Il n'a pas été question de nous transformer en ensemble de jazz vocal, cela n’est pas dans nos compétences et ce n’était pas le but. Paul a su utiliser la couleur du chœur, son expérience de la musique contemporaine et sa souplesse à voyager dans les styles pour créer de véritables ponts entre notre identité de « chœur classique » et son trio de jazz. À certains moments, nous retrouvons une écriture où le rapport au texte n'est pas si éloigné de nos répertoires, mais il a également utilisé les voix sans texte, dans une inspiration totalement instrumentale que l'on pourrait qualifier de « big band vocal ». Waves of Light is Paul Lay's first recording for a large ensemble. The album features ten original compositions for choir and jazz trio. It sets poems by Emily Dickinson, Victor Hugo, Henry David Thoreau and Pablo Neruda to music. It also includes two reinterpretations: Bach's Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen and Purcell's Hear my prayer, O Lord, illuminated with a new colour, with the collaboration of the other two members of the trio, Donald Kontomanou on drums and Clemens Van Der Feen on double bass.
Light is the common thread: divine and sacred light, but also intimate light, pierced by shadows – revelation, spiritual power and expression of the duality between light and darkness.
Paul Lay is a sound sculptor, playing with timbres, rhythms and silences like shadows and light. Waves of Light thus combines choral breathing and jazz in music that is open, sensitive and powerful.
The more experience I gain, the more I feel the need to return to the roots of what I play and what I love. (...) The music of the past is like an infinite source of spiritual nourishment that we must draw on to make our imagination fertile.
« La voix est fondamentale. C’est notre instrument à tous et c’est par ses vibrations et toutes ses couleurs et variations que j’ai été ému depuis mon plus jeune âge. Mon rapport à la musique a ainsi commencé avec la voix, toutes les chansons qui passaient à la radio.
Mon oreille s’accrochait sans cesse aux lignes mélodiques. J’ai compris, après quelques années de piano, qu’en entendant intérieurement ce que je jouais (ou en étant capable de le chanter à voix haute), je le mémorisais de manière juste et pour longtemps. En tant qu'improvisateur, le rapport au chant est intime : tout ce que je joue ou ce que j’improvise sur le clavier est chanté intérieurement ou fredonné en même temps. C’est également cela que j’enseigne à mes étudiants : si l'on peut chanter précisément la mélodie qui nous vient, il devient facile de la rendre sur l'instrument. » P.L.
Created in 2024, the programme was recorded in 2025 at the ThéâtredelaCité in Toulouse.
This album will be the first release on the Libellule Records label.
To mark its release in early 2026, Les Éléments and the Paul Lay Trio will return to this venue to present ‘Waves of Light’ to the Toulouse public for the first time, before embarking on a tour of Occitanie, visiting Montpellier, Tarbes and Perpignan, then Paris and Metz.
